Adventurers aim to ski Colorado's 100 tallest peaks

"It's a big goal, but the power trio of Colorado ski mountaineering has always aimed high.

Chris Davenport, Ted Mahon and Christy Mahon this spring launched a project to climb and ski 47 of Colorado's 13,000-foot peaks.

"Our thinking is 'Let's take it to the next level, and let's continue to raise the bar and continue to push ski mountaineering in Colorado and share everything we learn,' " Davenport said.

The three friends from the Roaring Fork Valley are well-acquainted with raising the bar.

Davenport skied all the state's 14,000-foot peaks in the winter of 2006-07, becoming the first to ski all 54 peaks in a single year. Ted Mahon became the third person to ski all the state's highest peaks in 2008. Two years later his wife, Christy, became the first woman to summit and ski the state's 54 fourteeners after a six-year mission.

It's a small but growing club, the ski mountaineers who have skied the state's highest peaks. While the focus on Colorado's high-profile 14ers remains as strong as ever, the 13er club is nonexistent. No one has climbed and skied all 100 of the state's tallest mountains.

Last year, when Aspen's Mahons joined Davenport on his spring "Ring of Fire" mission to ski 17 volcanic peaks in California and the Pacific Northwest, the state's top ski mountaineering triad started pondering the next step. Ted and Christy started chipping away at the thirteeners in 2011, having logged about a dozen descents. Davenport wanted in.
