August 26, 2011 Huron Peak, Colorado

Huron Peak is 14,003' of elevation and is a part of the Colliegate Peaks in the Sawatch Range of  Colorado.

Here is our trip report of Huron Peak.  The route we climbed is the North Ridge from Clear Creek route, it is only 6.75 miles roundtrip.  To get to the North Ridge route you drive either south on U.S. 24 from Leadville or North on U.S. 24 from Buena Vista and then turn on Chaffee County 390 Road.  390 is a dirt road that takes you to Winfield.  When you get to Winfield you will follow the road left, the road now starts to turn into a narrow 4WD road.  Continue on the road until you reach a parking lot.  The trailhead begins past the parking area.

The 4WD part of the road is not steep, just rocky with some ruts.  Most climbers camp below the parking lot, there are some great camp spots with fire pits along the 4WD road.

Here is a picture of the trailhead.

The trail begins in the trees.

Once out of the trees you have a great view of the Apostles.

First look at Huron Peak with the morning sun shinning.

Cross the valley, start heading up Huron Peak.

This is a picture after you hike through the trees you will cross a valley before ascending Huron Peak.

This picture is once again looking back at the trail.

Close to the summit!

The Last 800' is the steepest.
